Successful InterviewPERSONAL INTERVIEW


There are 3 stages for the personal interview: Preparation for the interview, During the interview and After the interview.
Details of each stage:                                   
It is important to note that the most important stage according to which you will be chosen for the personal interview and nominating you, i.e. the stage of preparation and creating your personal identity and practical academic expertise through the CV which gives the first impression about you to employers. Accordingly, try to have a CV that suits you in a professional manner.
STAGE 1: This stage normally starts when employers accept your CV and its contents of your own data, then notifying you of the date of the interview. By this action, you are considered one of the nominees in the list for the post required by them in the firm, corporation or company. Yet, you have to be aware that you will not assume your post there until you have passed this interview. Accordingly, this stage is the most important of the interview for passing it and obtaining the post advertised. To start this stage, you have to follow these tips:
1-        Identify the points of weakness and strength regarding the following:
      1)   Your personality.
      2)   All your data to be entered in the CV.
      3)   Skills.
      4)   Work experience.
      5)   The employment skills declared by the employer in Employment application.

After the above-mentioned evaluation process, try to work on the points of weakness and to identify their reasons and to find solutions for their remedy.


2-  Try to search for the future employer who will conduct the interview by:
2.1     Communicating with such employer through contact details or email.
2.2     Visiting the employer's website or pages on any of the social media, if any.
2.3     Contacting any person/ persons of your acquaintance (a friend or a relative) who you expect to be helpful in this respect.
2.4     Your direct communication with the official in charge of the interview or his special secretary, and requesting from him information about the employer.   
Through the above-mentioned items, you will be able to know:
a.   The employer's field of work/ activity.
b.   The date of establishing and incorporating this firm.
c.   The vocational history of the employer.
d.   His branches inside and outside the country.
e.   The competitive employers in the domestic and foreign market.
f.     All relative matters of this employer such as matters which you can get and get acquainted with.
3-  Try to prepare the following items, or some of them, and include them in an elegant file to be submitted to the person in charge of the interview during the interview:
               3.1    Appraisal/appreciation Certificate from customers or suppliers who feel satisfied by your work performance.
               3.2    Copies of significant reports prepared by you.
               3.3    Samples and examples of your previous or current work.
               3.4    Recommendations/ certificates of acknowledgement and appreciation from managers and employees about you regarding your current/ previous work.
               3.5    Certificates of experience and excellence.
               3.6    Your CV.
               3.7    University degrees/ diploma, Master/s degree, doctorate degree...etc.

            4-        Before going to interview:
               4.1    Try to arrive early before the time fixed for the interview.
               4.2    Take with you the letter including the time of the interview (if any) sent by the employer.
               4.3    Take with you a small notebook for writing down remarks and the like when needed.
               4.4    Try to know the official uniform of the future employer in order to be dressed in suitable clothes. You can know such uniform by:
               4.5    Contacting a person who might have knowledge, who works inside the company or who you expect he deals with it or visited it.
               4.6    The official in charge of the interview or his secretary will be pleased if you directly contacted him and asked him about the uniform of the company.
Next, follow these tips:
-      Show your elegance well compared to their official uniform.
-      Don't be exaggerating in your elegance.
-      Avoid using any exaggerated style.
-      Dark colors will impart you more dignity than pale colors in case of the official uniform other than the THOBE as in the Gulf countries.
-      Avoid applying too much perfume.  


STAGE 2:  During the interview:
Now you are supposed to have finished the first stage perfectly and gone to your appointment on time or before it. Now you will introduce yourself to the secretary and give him a copy of interview request.
When entering the office of the person in charge of the interview, your personal interview starts, and you have to follow these tips:
Of the factors that will help you leave a good impression on the official in charge of the interview and which you achieved through the first stage are these:
-      The way you are dressed and your elegance.
-      Your character.

These factors give a good impression about you:
-      Shaking hands strongly and confidently without tension or anxiety.
-      As soon he introduces himself, extend your hand for handshaking.
-      Zeal.
-      Smile.
-      Wait till you are invited to sit down.
-      When seated, extend your arms on your thighs and relax while inclining a little forward.
-      Place your feet on the ground.
-      Look directly at the person in charge of the interview.
-      Try to start talking to him about a matter relating to his clothes or office, such as talking about his elegance or the list of books arranged on in his office, and that such matter amazes you. And try to attract his attention to an aspect that attracts you in him.
-      Answer questions in an audible manner.
-      Try to start talking first about any subject which might be acceptable to him, such as:
1-   Talking briefly about the trip from your house to the interview.
2-   To break the tension and anxiety barrier, if any, try to discuss with the person/ persons in charge of the interview any matter you deem suitable, such as: "could you please tell me about yourself or about your company, the building, etc.?"  
Remember that completing the interview perfectly is of an importance not less than performing its beginning perfectly, too. Remember also that the first impression is very important in the evaluation process.  

During the interview: Your manner during the interview:
·     Talk clearly, use the body language and communicate with the eyes.
·     Don't interrupt the person in charge of the interview even if he interrupted you.
·     While being asked questions, don't try to ask him questions in an exaggerated manner. You will have the opportunity to ask questions whether during the interview or later.
·     Try to make your accent and manner of talking matching those of the person in charge of the interview.
·     Don't ask him any questions regarding the salary, by doing so you will seem to be seeking only money. Remember there will be enough time for you to discuss this matter.
·     Don't give very lengthy answers, nor give answer of only ONE word.
·     Give as many examples as possible of your achievements and challenges which you met and of your successes.
·     Try to enhance any positive information about you and mention any skills you possess.
·     Remember to describe the duties of the job you have applied for. Try to make your answers on your achievements and skills within the same scope.
·     For some of the questions asked by the person in charge of the interview, you may need some time to think before answering. In this case, don't be worried, for this shows that you are thinking carefully.
·     Don't tell lies. Instead tell the truth. Be honest and true in your answers. Don't try to change the reality. By doing so, you show that you don't know the answer which is better that failing to give answers.
·     Don't criticize your current job, whether the work environment or the work team of employers, managers and colleagues. This will make you appear as a negative person and difficult to be satisfied, and this will make the person in charge of the interview doubt your faithfulness and honesty.  
·     Don't disclose the secrets of your current job. By doing so you will appear faithful to your work.
·     Remember that some of the persons in charge of the interview will intentionally try to excite you, which will uncover to them the nature of your character and your ability to be calm under pressure.
·     The person in charge of the interview will declare the end of the interview.  You have to ask about the next step, and whether there will be another round of interviews, and how to know that by telephone or email...etc.
·        At the end of the interview, you have to stand up, shake hands with the person in charge of the interview, thank him for interviewing you and smile.


Frequently Asked Questions are those:
·     Talk about yourself.
To answer this question, you needn't tell all history of your life. You need to ask the person in charge of the interview to be more specific in his questions before answering. Ask him: "on what side of my life do you want me to tell you?"  He is likely to ask you to talk about your work. You have to describe your character in 2 minute as maximum. Concentrate on your positive features and combine between them and the main responsibilities of the job you are applying for. If he asks you to talk about yourself outside work, you will still have to evaluate an answer that demonstrates that you are the right person for the job. In the end, this interview will not be conducted on any aspect other than work, the potential job.
·     What are the aspects that you like most in your current job?
This may be one of the deceiving questions. Anyhow, you can, for example,  say: "Personally, I can't think of an aspect which I don't like in my job, but I think that the thing I like more than the others is dealing directly with customers, and for this treason I have applied for this job."
·     What are the most difficult challenges you have met in your work?
Since you have prepared yourself well before the interview through the first preliminary stage, this question will be a good one for you. So now you have to mention the difficulties and challenges you have met, and how you overcame them, giving examples and detailed explanation.    
·     Why do you want to leave your current job?
Don't tell any negative reasons; be far away from criticizing any aspect in your current ob. The only answer which you can choose is:" I am seeking to expand my experience, and I think I can do that in a better way in a new establishment or company. In addition, unfortunately, there are no opportunities for developing my experience in my current job".
·     How do you see your present / previous boss?
Try to remember.. Keep away from criticism. Try to answer positively that he is a great person or so on. And this is not a reason for you to lie as much as to not to lie and to tell the truth…and the person in charge of the interview wants to know the extent of your faithfulness to your boss at work, and he also doesn't know the other side of the story in case you gave him any negative answer which would seem to him that you complain without reasons.  .
·     What do you think is the role of your (current job)?
Explain the aim of the job in general and your main responsibilities and functions. If he tries to interrupt you objecting against your answers with the aim of testing your character, ask him politely to give reasons justifying his objection. Show to him that you are able to argue him and discuss in a good manner without being aggressive or defensive.    
·     What do you know about our company?
Dealing with this question depends on the extent of your readiness through the first stage. You have to answer using the information you previously got about the company adding these phrases:" … and I noticed in your magazine, or your website, or through talking to your receptionist, that....”
·     Why have you applied for this job?
Talk about the benefits which you will get from this job. Be specific regarding the kind of challenge you enjoy talking about. Don't give lengthy explanation; be brief in answering the questions. Let your answers be within the functions and requirements of the job you applied for.  Try to talk about the merits of their company and its practical atmosphere through your searching for information about them and your knowledge of them in the first stage. You will find the suitable atmosphere and the work environment in the light of the information which you previously collected about them.  

·      What can you add to this job?
Try to combine between your previous expertise and skills and the requirements of the job you have applied for. Try to talk about some of the important points of the employer which they want to find in the person seeking a job at their company, such as showing that you master a certain skill as dealing with customers, including those who are well experienced; or that master another skill in which you find yourself excellent. Tell him that you can easily adapt to the others and that you perform you job well within a work team.


·     How long do you expect to stay with this company?
The ideal answer is:" I would like to settle in this company and to be promoted. I think I will settle here since I can achieve progress and accomplishments". You have to point out that you would like to stay with them for years.
·     What are your major points of strength?
You have to highlight the main responsibilities and functions of the job you have applied for. Also, talk about the points of strength which you previously prepared through the first stage.
·     What are your major points of weakness?
This is a deceiving question!! He invites you to mention a negative aspect bout you. Resist It. Try to use one of these defensive methods"
1.  The spirit of Humor (" It is my love to chocolates!!)"
2.  Mention a point of weakness not connected with work.
3.  An old point of weakness existed long ago in work. Say that you had overcome it and is now one of your points of strength.
4.  You should have prepared yourself well for this question in the first stage.
5.  Mention a point of weakness which he will see as a point of strength, such as: "I can't delay performing any task entrusted to me whatsoever. I insist on performing it even at the expense of my comfort." 

·     Where do you see yourself during the next five years?
Make your answer open. Don't specify anything which the employer would possibly not achieve for you. Demonstrate your zeal and that you will continue promoting your values and capabilities.
·     How do your colleagues see you?
Highlight your positive aspects as a work colleague, such as cooperation and mastering your work in the team.
·     How do your friends see you?
Try to choose the strongest points relating to the job requirements, such as honesty and supporting your friends.

·     What are your external interests?
Never invent hobbies that you don't practice. Tell him whether you are an athlete, you like competition, reading, and so on...etc. Honestly and truly.
·     Tell us about what you have lately read and enjoyed reading.
Be true and give true answer even if you have not read anything lately at all.
·     How do you get the best of what the others have?
This question is usually asked if the applicant is seeking the post of general manager or supervisor. You have to answer as follows:
1.    Good communication.
2.    Skills of dealing with the work team.
3.    Getting acquainted with every member of the work team individually.
4.    Praising and appreciating the good performance.

·     How do you settle disputes in your team?
1.    By justice.
2.    By discussing the problems with individuals in privacy.
3.    By ensuring reaching the roots of problems.
4.    By reaching solutions.

·     What is your boss's view  about you?
Answer positively and be specific in your answer. Don't talk about negatives at all.
·     Why did you spend just this short period in your current job?
The ideal answer is: " I would like to settle in one company for several years. But till now I have had to change the employer in order to expand my experience and to avoid feeling being lost in the job I am assuming".

·     You may be asked this question: "I'm afraid you are always not stable in your job?"
The ideal answer is: "I have been seeking so far to find the environment and medium where I can be stable and settled and to make a difference in work. Up to now, I have had to change the job in order to be able to satisfy the desire of challenge in my work and to find the medium without the need for moving to another company."
·     Why have you not found a new job till now?
Answer saying: "it is important for me to accept only the job which seems the right one and to which I see I will be able to contribute.
·     When do you expect to get a promotion?
Answer saying: "I hope to be promoted when I add something new to my company and when my eligibility is demonstrated."
·     What salary do you expect to get?
Instead of answering, ask him: "what salary do you expect to pay me for this job?" or, ask him about the average salary of the potential job offered by them. If he refused to answer, you will have the right also to refuse politely answering his question. Or you can postpone answering it to a later time after evaluating you according to the interview.
·     What is the salary you see you deserve?
You have to be well acquainted with the average salary offered you for this job in the labor market and which you will accept. You may ask for a salary a little higher than the offered one, pointing out that you have studied the average salaries offered. You have to expect him to answer as in negotiations, "The amount you have requested is too high”. But don't let this affect your confidence.
·     Special questions:
The personal interview is a bilateral one. As the person in charge of the interview has the right to ask questions, you also have the full right to ask him questions as you like.
If he inquired whether you have questions, answer him saying: "Yes, I am really interested in joining this company, and I have some questions to ask."



Don't ask so many questions. You can choose 2 or 3 from these questions:
        1-    Why has this job become vacant?
        2-    Could you please tell me more about you and your company"
        3-    Do you grant internal promotions?
        4-    In case you choose me for this job, where will you see me during the next five years?
        5-    Have you any reservations regarding my capability for this job?


STAGE 3: After the personal interview:
You will probably feel satisfied immediately after the end of the interview. When get to your house, you have to do 2 things:
          1-    Write a letter of acknowledgement and gratitude to the person in charge of the interview and               send it by email or post, by any other way.
